Five one, ITN nil
I don't know which surprised me more - that Channel 5 (sorry 5, they don't like being called Channel 5 any more) has ditched ITN as its news supplier or that 5 is seven years old. That's, coo, just under a seventh of my lifetime. I nearly watched a programme on it once, too.
But what does this mean for the beleagured ITN? I really don't think that's too strong a word. It means that it's had two serious blows in rapid succession. The News at Ten is currently known as the News at When because of its habit of moving around then settling on the graveyard 10.30 slot - for me that's 'finish up, take the dog out and think about sleep' slot. It's also been criticised for the lack of depth which is fair enough - the BBC's coverage is vastly better most of the time, and Channel 4 better yet (rather good news site at
http://www.channel4.com/news/ for them as wants it).
For all of the criticism by MPs and media players, though, it must be the ditching by 5 that will really hurt. OK, it's dropped the soft porn but the channel's name is hardly a byword for quality even now.
I wonder whether Playhouse Disney needs a news supplier..?
